Shifting Shades

 Magnetic polish is so fun, but so hard to capture on camera. These photos didn't catch the shifting cat's eye effect, but they at least got the color shift of the multichrome! I added multichrome flakies as well for some extra fun, and then a little bit of decoration using gel paint and some dipping powder.

Magnetic Memorial

 Time to play with some magnetic polish! I wanted to have fun with more Memorial Day nails, while also experimenting with magnets. I don't have any magnetic polish I would truly call 'red', but this reddish purple did the job fairly well! It rather reminds me of those 'country style' or 'rustic' more subdued color schemes.

 I began by using a base coat of China Glaze White on White. I knew I would be using tape, so I wanted to wait until it was as dry as possible. I then placed two pieces of striping tape side by side to make the stripe wider. Next, I painted over it with two coats of Sinful Colors Captivate Me. On the second coat, I used a magnet to apply a diagonal stripe effect. It still showed up well after the tape was removed! China Glaze Sparks Will Fly was used over the bottom fourth of the nail, and I used the same magnet to add more effect. The magnet was easy to align, and using the same one did make it seem more cohesive.

 I decided to leave my middle and ring nails as one solid coat of each magnetic polish. I absolutely adore Captivate Me. It reacts amazingly well to the magnet, and has a brilliant holo glitter that really shines in the darker patches. Sparks Will Fly doesn't show the magnetic pattern as crisply, but it had a wonderful formula.

Lastly, I did my thumbs as half-and-half of each magnetic polish split by a line of white. I had some metal star brads that weren't intended for nail art, but I cut off the spines and sanded the edges, and it worked perfectly!

 Now that my polish collection spreadsheet is mostly done, I decided that if I'm ever stumped for an idea for nail art I am going to let the whims of random number generators decide what polish I should use. Sounds like a great way to get me out of ruts and make sure I actually try all of my polish at least once!

And then of course the random number gods decided I should use a dark silver magnetic polish. Haha! I do like the dark gunmetal silver color, but I was stumped as to how I was going to artify over the magnetic. Revlon Starry Eyed is a pretty yet 'grainy' dark metallic silver, and as far as magnetic polishes go it's a pretty weak transformation. However, coverage is great! This is two easy coats.

I found my inspiration when I started thinking vertically. I painted half of each nail with two coats of ORLY Charged Up. I was originally going to do a silver stripe down the center, but I used a bright fuchsia piece of striping tape when blocking in the color and fell in love with the effect.

 I grabbed my trusty striper brush and a bottle of OPI DS Extravagance. I painted a stripe down the center of each nail. I love that effect! It still wasn't fancy enough, so I snagged Pueen stamping plate 33 and Milani Silver Stilettos (a bright silver) to add a design to the purple half.

 After all of my painterly fun, it was a nice break to do something shiny and bold that looks good at a distance. Of course, all these photos were taken after a good five hours of wear, so most of the magnetic effect had faded. Even still, the dark gray color is really pretty.

Magnetic Monday!

 

I've managed to acquire quite a few magnetic polishes, but I've mainly used them for stamping as they tend to be such pretty metallic colors. It's time to play with magnets! 

Today I decided to use Sinful Colors Polar Opposites. It's a silver metallic polish with awesome blue/teal shimmer that really pops when magnets are applied. I love it! The effect doesn't seem to capture as well on camera, or at least I couldn't catch it..

Because I can't leave well enough alone, I decided to decorate with a little craft store hex glitter. I used a small triangle of light blue on each nail, framed in silver glitter.

Sparkling Stamped Swirlies

 First off, I am in love with Pueen's stamping plates. My other stamping plates are a 2012 Bundle Monster set, before they went to the larger sizes, and I've had difficulty getting designs to transfer and getting them to fit on my nails. I love the larger size of Pueen's designs (though to be fair I haven't tried larger sized versions of any other brands) and it seems I'm much more successful at picking up whatever design in whatever polish I want. I also love the cute little case the stamping plates come in!

 Anywho, this is a fun swirly design from plate PUEEN37. Another nice thing about the designs being larger is that I can select different portions of the design for each nail, so it doesn't look quite as repetitive. I smooged the stamping on a few fingers, but not too badly. For the base I used CQ Honey, which is an awesome subdued yellow creme. To make it less of a headache I used China Glaze White on White first before I added the yellow, since it was a little streaky and I didn't feel like doing four coats of yellow.

 For the stamping I used Sinful Colors Captivate Me, which is amazing. It's a magnetic magenta/purple polish with the neatest rainbow microglitter scattered throughout. I tried to catch some of the glitter effect on the nails, but it's frustratingly hard to get all the colors to photograph apparently. So have a bottle shot instead!

Day 14: Dragon

 This idea turned out rather fun! Rather than just painting some dragons and going all literal like I usually do, I decided to just abuse my magnetic China Glaze polishes. Snagged an awesome magnet on extreme clearance at Icing the other day, woo!

The idea I had was to just do more of a dragon scales theme. It might not look particularly 'dragony' in the end, but I do like the effect!
